Narrative Technical Writing: Using storytelling techniques in technical articles
Over the years, I’ve been questioning the standard blueprints for writing technical articles. I’ve been exploring storytelling techniques in my articles. Stories have been an integral part of human societies for ever. There’s a reason for it.
Stories engage. They tap into emotions. They convey messages better than raw facts. They lower a reader’s cognitive load, helping them understand better and recall what they’ve learned.
Recent scientific studies have also looked at the neuroscience of storytelling.
So, what’s this Substack about? This is my journal about narrative technical writing. I’ll write my thoughts. I’ll describe my writing experiments—the different ways I try to tell stories in my technical articles.
I’ll be thinking aloud in these regular posts, analysing what I read in books and articles, figuring out how to apply what I read and learn to my own writing.
You’ll see me change my mind on which techniques work best.
